She was born on March 29 1985 in Roswell New Mexico. Gerina Michel Mendoza was her birth name. Gerina Stevenson is the daughter of Mexican parents Rita Stevenson (mother) and Alan Stevenson (father). She is of Mexican-American heritage as well as an American in nationality. At a very young age her drive to become active in sports was strong. Gerina started playing golf when she was just 15 years old. Gerina finished her high school studies through Goddard High School. As a high school student, Gerina was the winner of her first prize at the New Mexico golf state tournament. In addition, she was a volleyball player who competed at the national level. The first time she attended the University of Texas. During the senior seasons of her professional career, she had won every tournament in which she competed. In her undergraduate professional career, she took home her the Conference USA Individual Champion Player of the Year and UTEP Female Athlete of the Year.

Aspen Ladd was trained in BJJ, kickboxing wrestling and boxing before her first appearance as an amateur at WCFC aged 18.
